Hunger and Despair Quest Guide & Walkthrough KCD2

Welcome to Day 25 of the Siege, where food is as rare as a polite bandit, and everyone’s patience is thinner than your coin pouch after a trip to the bathhouse. Capon is hungry, and since you’re the only person in this camp who actually gets things done, you’ve been elected to find him something to eat.
Here’s a walkthrough, broken down step by step so you can get back to not dying on the battlefield during the Hunger and Despair quest.
Step 1: Try to Find Food (Optional, But Hey, You Can Try)
You can ask Janosh (marked on your map as "B") for food.
Spoiler: Janosh has no food left. Shocking, I know.
Since begging didn’t work, let’s talk about how to actually get food for Capon.
Step 2: Feeding Capon (Pick Your Poison)
You have three ways to do this, each with its own consequences:
Method #1: Do Nothing (The Lazy Route)
Talk to Capon again.
Tell him you couldn’t find food and that you’re not bringing him any.
He grumbles, but the quest moves on immediately without consequences.
Method #2: Give Him Wine (The Classy Route)
There’s wine in locked chests inside the castle:
Opposite your bedroom (where von Bergow was held).
Above your bedroom, on the top floor, in front of a bed.
Both are medium difficulty locks, so bring lockpicks.
Give Capon one bottle of wine, and he’ll stop complaining.
Method #3: Shoe Soup (The "Hope You Like Boiled Feet" Route)
Talk to Musa and the gang near the inner courtyard gate.
They suggest boiling shoe leather into soup (yep, times are tough).
Your next step: Steal Lady Frenzl’s fancy shoes (marked on the map).
The chest is hard difficulty, so if you can’t pick it, either level up your skills or steal a key.
Bring the shoes to Musa, and they’ll whip up a soup that smells like boiled farts.
Capon will eat it, but this counts as eating meat, which voids the "Lent" trophy.
Pick your method, then move on.
Step 3: Bury the Dead (Because, You Know, Respect)
Regardless of what you fed Capon, the game forces you into a cutscene where you help bury the dead. Father Godwin will say a prayer. Pick whatever option you like—it doesn’t change anything.
Once that’s done, it’s time to defend the walls because, of course, the enemy picked this exact moment to attack.
Step 4: Defend the North Wall (Because Nothing is Ever Easy)
Task: Push Down Ladders & Kill Enemies
There are four ladders leading up the walls. Push them down before the enemies get up.
If enemies do climb up, take them out first before moving to the next ladder.
Need a halberd? There’s a weapon rack nearby—grab one.
Task: Clear the Tower
After the ladders, crossbowmen breach the tower.
Break down the tower door and fight them inside.
Clean out the tower and push down any remaining ladders.
Once the enemies fall back, another cutscene plays. Now it’s time for some emotional goodbyes.
Step 5 (Optional): Say Your Goodbyes
Goodbye to Katherine ("I’m Done With This War" Arc)
Marker: "L" in the inner courtyard.
She’s crying, and you can talk to her for more backstory.
If you already spoke with Zizka, you get extra dialogue options.
You can also let her treat your wounds (free healing!).
Goodbye to Capon ("Romance Route" Arc – Read Carefully)
Marker: "M" (he’s sitting on his bed).
If you’ve been nice to Capon throughout the game, you get a romance option:
Pick "The Black Knight?"
Then "How does their story end?"
Finally, "(Kiss Him)".
This leads to a cutscene where Henry and Capon spend the night together. If you don’t want to go this route, just avoid picking these dialogue options.
Step 6: Wrap It Up & Move On
If you’re not saying goodbyes, head to the ramparts and "wait" by holding X / A.
This ends the quest and moves on to the next one: Reckoning.
Final Blurb
Lazy but efficient? Just tell Capon you’re not getting him food and move on.
Want to be fancy? Give him wine (easy, no drawbacks).
Want to disgust everyone? Make shoe soup (voids Lent trophy).
Defend the walls wisely—don’t let enemies hit you from behind.
Goodbyes are optional, but talking to Katherine heals you, and finishing Capon’s romance unlocks a unique scene.
Congrats! You survived hunger, a siege, and an emotionally needy Capon, and are officially done with the quest Hunger and Despair. We hope our guide helped!
Now, off to your next headache in Reckoning.
