OSRS Sailing Lockbox Guide
Old School RuneScape (OSRS)

Lockboxes are one of the coolest endgame mechanics in OSRS Sailing. They hide powerful ship schematics, but finding and unlocking them takes both skill and patience.

How Lockboxes Work

Each lockbox contains one of the lost shipbuilding schematics. To unlock them, you’ll first need to find the matching key and directions scroll. The key and lockbox are always located on different islands, which means a bit of back-and-forth sailing.

Opening a lockbox doesn’t use it up, but each schematic can only be claimed once. You can still view any collected ones later through your Sailing log.

Lockbox Mechanics Explained

When you inspect a lockbox, your character copies down a set of directions. These point toward another island where the corresponding key can be found. Once you’ve dug up the key, you can return to the lockbox island to open it and claim your award, which is 1 schematic and 2 burbs.

You don’t need to physically have the directions before digging up the key, so completionists can skip ahead if they already know the locations.

All Lockboxes and Keys by Level

Here’s a clean summary of every Sailing lockbox and its key location.

Sailing Level Schematic Key Island Lockbox Island
42 Salvaging Station Schematic The Pandemonium Chinchompa Island
51 Gale Catcher Schematic The Onyx Crest Anglers' Retreat
56 Rosewood Hull Schematic Isle of Bones Shimmering Atoll
64 Rosewood Cargo Hold Schematic Minotaurs’ Rest The Crown Jewel
72 Dragon Helm Schematic Laguna Aurorae Sunbleak Island
73 Dragon Salvaging Hook Schematic Ynsdail Lledrith Island
76 Eternal Brazier Schematic Tear of the Soul Buccaneers’ Haven
76 Dragon Cannon Schematic Buccaneers’ Haven Deepfin Point
81 Rosewood & Cotton Sails Schematic Charred Island Brittle Isle
87 Dragon Keel Schematic Drumstick Isle Grimstone

Each schematic provides a blueprint for new ship parts that boost your performance in combat, navigation, or cargo capacity.

Best Tips for Collecting Them

  • Bring a spade to every key island, even when you’re not hunting schematics.

  • Unlock teleport options like the Sailor’s Amulet to cut travel time between key and lockbox islands.

  • Note that some key islands overlap with other Sailing content like trials or facilities, so multitasking helps.

  • Always check your Sailing log after unlocking one to confirm it registered.

Final Blurb

Lockboxes turn high-level Sailing into a real treasure hunt. Each one rewards powerful schematics and a reason to keep exploring the seas of Gielinor. Grab your keys, chart your course, and start unlocking those lost secrets of shipcraft.
