Review: Enigma of Fear

Enigma of Fear is an indie horror game released on November 28, 2024 with a pretty solid mixture of spooky storytelling, open-world exploration, investigative gameplay, along with combining pixel art and 3D graphics. This game promises an eerie, story-driven experience for people who like horror games. After playing it, here's our review:

Story and Setting

You play as Mia, a young paranormal investigator looking for her missing father, the leader of a secret group called Ordo Ritus. The game takes place in "The Perimeter," a haunting, supernatural zone filled with dark secrets and dangers. Mia’s companion is her loyal dog, Loopy, who helps sniff out clues and warn of threats. The bond between Mia and Loopy adds a “lighthearted” touch to an otherwise creepy world.

Without too much spoiler, the storyline is one of the game’s biggest strengths and drew us in quickly with its mystery and emotional feelings.

Exploration and Gameplay

The game has five open-world areas for you to explore at your own pace. Each region is packed with puzzles, hidden clues, and spooky encounters. This freedom is actually pretty nice but can be confusing at times since the game doesn’t always provide clear directions. You might enjoy figuring things out on your own, but it can also feel frustrating when you're unsure if you're even making any progress.

The gameplay does a good job of combining investigation, puzzle-solving, and combat. The detective elements are also very well-designed (you’ll examine documents, gather clues, and piece together mysteries). Solving puzzles feels rewarding and does actually make you feel like a true investigator.

However, with that said, combat can be a bit clunky. Mia’s movements feel slow, and in stressful situations, almost like the controls might not respond as quickly as you’d like. There’s also little guidance on how to use certain tools or abilities too which can lead to trial-and-error frustration over and over.

Visuals and Sound

Visually, Enigma of Fear is stunning (in its own way). The mix of pixel art and 3D environments creates a pretty unique and honestly eerie atmosphere. Different lighting that they put in place adds to the suspense as well, with dim areas and flickering shadows making every corner feel like there is a potential threat.

The sound design is also great. Each and every creak, whisper, and distant growl kept us on the edge. The soundtrack changes and adapts to the action, with tension during scary moments and letting you breathe during quieter scenes. We, however, ran into inconsistent audio levels that could sometimes make dialogue a little bit hard to hear.

Performance Issues

While the game looks and sounds great, there are admittedly some technical hiccups. Even on high-end systems, players might experience frame rate drops and high GPU usage (as we did). These issues aren’t constant, but they’re noticeable enough to affect the experience.

Length and Value

At around $20, Enigma of Fear has some great value. Depending on how much you explore and solve puzzles, the game provides 15–20 hours of content. The open-world structure and hidden secrets felt like it had a solid amount of replayability which makes it worth the price.

Strengths and Weaknesses

What Works:

  • A compelling story with emotional depth.

  • Creative pixel art and 3D visuals that set it apart from other games.

  • Challenging but rewarding investigative mechanics.

  • Immersive sound design that creates a horror atmosphere.

What Could Be Better:

  • Combat and movement feel slow and unresponsive at times.

  • Lack of tutorials makes some mechanics confusing.

  • Performance issues like frame rate drops can be distracting.

  • The open-world design can leave you feeling lost without much clear guidance.

Is It Worth Playing?

If you enjoy story-driven horror games with strong investigative elements then Enigma of Fear is worth a try. Its unique art style, rich atmosphere, and engaging puzzles outweigh any of the technical flaws. However, if you prefer fast-paced action or polished mechanics, this might not be the game for you.
