If you’re wondering whether you can romance companions in Avowed, the short answer is no. Unlike other RPGs such as Baldur’s Gate 3 or The Outer Worlds, Avowed does not have a dedicated romance system. Instead, the game focuses on building meaningful relationships with companions in non-romantic ways.

Here’s a quick article to explain why you cannot romance anyone in Avowed.

Why Doesn’t Avowed Have Romance?

Obsidian Entertainment made a clear design choice to skip romance options in Avowed. Game director Carrie Patel explained that creating deep, satisfying romantic arcs takes significant effort. The team decided to focus on making strong friendships and engaging interactions instead.

According to Patel:

  • Romance needs to be done right – It’s not just about adding dialogue options but creating fulfilling character arcs.

  • Players expect multiple romance options – Balancing romance and non-romantic interactions would require extra resources.

  • Avowed prioritizes player choices and consequences – The game focuses on how your actions shape the world and how companions respond to your decisions.

How Do Companion Relationships Work?

Even though romance isn’t an option, companions will react to your choices in meaningful ways. There is no strict morality meter, but your actions will shape how characters feel about you. If you make decisions they dislike, they won’t hesitate to call you out.

Your relationships with companions in Avowed will be built through:

  • Dialogue choices – Your words and actions influence how characters see you.

  • Quests and moral decisions – Companions may approve or disapprove of the choices you make.

  • World interactions – NPCs will react based on your past actions, shaping future encounters.

Could Romance Be Added in the Future?

While Avowed doesn’t include romance at launch, Patel didn’t completely rule out the idea for future games. If Obsidian decides to expand relationships in upcoming DLCs or sequels, romance could be a possibility.

For now, if you were hoping for companion love stories, you’ll have to settle for deep friendships and engaging character interactions instead.
