Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Tips and Tricks

Between the fancy art terms and enemies that hit like a truck, you're pushed into the deep end with a polite nod and Expedition 33 throws a lot at you. So, if you’re feeling a little obscur yourself, here’s a mixed bag of tips to help you survive The Paintress’ world—minus one tip, because life isn’t fair.

Forget About Parrying

Unless you’ve got reflexes faster than your internet connection, don’t bother chasing that perfect parry. Dodging is safer, easier, and won’t make you want to throw your controller. Equip Luminas that reward dodges, and live a longer, less stressful life.

Paint Cages Are Always Worth It

See a glowing locked chest? That’s a Paint Cage. Shoot three hidden locks nearby to open it. The loot inside—like rare weapons or Recoats—is always worth the scavenger hunt. If you’re stuck, smash crates or, you know, try looking up.

Change Party Members Often

In Expedition 33, only characters who fight get XP. Rotate your squad regularly so nobody gets left behind. Plus, the game loves to force certain characters into your party, so keeping everyone leveled saves you from painful surprises later.

Use Gun Shots for Shields

Normally, wasting bullets is a bad idea. But when enemies have shield icons, your gun becomes your best friend. Each bullet knocks off a shield, so don’t be stingy—just make sure you leave enough AP to finish the job.

Help Nevrons, Don’t Hurt Them

Not every Nevron wants to ruin your day. Some are just lost souls looking for a helping hand (or a random item nearby). Be nice, fetch what they need, and you’ll get rewarded with gear and goodies. Attack them, and, well... no presents for you.

Resting Respawns Enemies

Camping at an Expedition Flag fully heals you—but respawns all enemies. If you're low on health but don’t want to fight everything twice, use a Chroma Elixir instead. They recharge when you rest, so don’t hoard them like a dragon.

Yes, Fight the Merchant

Every merchant in Expedition 33 is secretly itching for a duel. Challenge them to a 1v1, win, and they’ll offer you a unique item you can’t get anywhere else. It’s always worth it—just pick your strongest fighter and show them who’s boss.

The Yellow Bar Means It’s Break Time

That yellow meter under enemy health isn’t just decoration. Fill it up, then hit them with a Break skill to stun them, deal bonus damage, and skip their turn. Perfect for turning tough fights—or annoying mimes—into easy wins.

Final Blurb

Expedition 33 won’t hold your hand, but now you’ve got a few tricks up your sleeve. Just remember—dodge more than you parry, befriend strange painted creatures, and always pick a fight with your local merchant. The world’s weird, but you’ll fit right in.
