He is Coming Game Guide & Tips
Written by Michael Owen | He is Coming
This guide covers everything you need to know to start winning runs in He is Coming; a turn-based autobattler roguelite with light RPG mechanics, fast progression, and a deadly day-night cycle.
You explore an endless map across multi-day cycles, build your stats through item sets, and survive long enough to defeat each week’s boss.
Core Structure
Each week has 3 days and 3 nights, followed by a boss fight. Daytime ends after 50 tiles of movement, night ends after 30.
During the day, enemies are static and your sight radius is 5 tiles. At night, sight drops to 3, and enemies begin chasing you if they spot you. They move as fast as you do, so it’s easy to get surrounded.
You can fight the boss early from the pause menu, but doing so won’t advance the week. Defeating a boss adds 2 more item slots to your inventory. Item slot space is the main way your power scales across a run.
Game Modes
There are three game modes, each with different item sets and enemies.
Woodland
Basic enemies and loot pool. Beat it once to unlock Swampland.
Swampland
Harder enemies, new items, and unique item sets.
Kingmaker
You fight previous players' builds as bosses. You choose 3 item bundles from each region (Woodland and Swampland) at the start. Beat 5 bosses in one run to earn a crown. Crowns unlock character skins.
Map and Movement
You always move on footpaths. Chests, camps, merchants, and anvils are scattered randomly. Chests offer 3 item choices. Merchants sell or enhance gear. Anvils combine two matching items into a stronger version.
Campfires can skip night and heal 10 HP. But you might want to explore at night anyway to reach more chests… if you’re willing to risk it.
Combat Basics & Stats
Battles are auto-resolved but turn-based. You and the enemy take turns attacking, with speed determining who goes first. In case of a tie, you go first.
Stats include:
Health: Reach zero, you die
Armor: Blocks damage before health, resets between fights
Attack: Flat damage dealt each turn
Speed: First turn and some passive bonuses
Press CTRL to enable quickbattle mode, which skips animations.
Item System
You start with 4 item slots. Each item triggers in slot order every turn. Most items give stat bonuses, but some add effects based on battle conditions.
Common triggers include:
Countdown: Activates after X turns
Exposed: Triggers the first time you lose all armor
Wounded: Triggers the first time you drop below half HP
There’s a large variety of gear, and certain item combinations form sets. Sets grant powerful bonuses, such as healing to full, stacking thorns, or restoring armor.
You can view all known sets in the compendium. Gathering and combining items expands your loot pool, which unlocks new gear for future runs.
Weapons and Forging
You only carry one weapon, but it can be enhanced. Merchants let you apply oils or add affixes like freeze or poison. These weapons help build around specific synergies like high speed, armor drain, or healing triggers.
Forge anvils can’t enhance weapons but can upgrade matching inventory items into stronger variants, which is key to surviving mid to late runs.
Boss Strategy
You can check the upcoming boss at any time. Bosses are unique and often counter common builds. Some heal themselves, others drain stats, and some deal massive damage up front. Build with the boss in mind. For example, spend your gold if the boss steals it.
Progression and Scaling
Your character starts fresh every run, with no permanent stat upgrades. There’s no meta scaling. Power only comes from smart item combos, inventory management, and choosing when to risk a fight. Some runs can end in minutes.
Others snowball into overpowered builds with the right synergies.
Final Blurb
He Is Coming is fast, punishing, and incredibly rewarding once you learn how its systems layer. Map knowledge, smart routing, and proper item combos are what separate early deaths from powerful runs.
Start slow, learn the items, and focus on surviving the first boss. The rest of the game opens up from there.
FAQ
What happens after I beat a boss?
You unlock 2 extra inventory slots. This is the main form of power scaling.
How do I unlock more item sets?
Find and equip matching items during runs. Sets are added to your compendium automatically.
Does the game get easier over time?
No. There’s no meta progression. Each run is skill-based with random gear.
How do Kingmaker bosses work?
They use the builds of real players who completed past runs. Expect strong, optimized gear.
Should I explore at night?
Yes, but only if you can survive. Night lets you access more chests, but enemies chase you.
Can I skip nights?
Yes. Use a campfire to skip to morning and heal 10 health.
