In The Precinct, your standard issue police car gets the job done, but it’s far from your only option. If you want something tougher for ramming or just a faster ride for those long chases through Averno City, you can change vehicles anytime as long as you unlock the right skill.

Here’s exactly how to swap cars and take any vehicle off the street for official police use.

Step 1: Unlock the Commandeer Skill

Before you can hop into civilian rides like a boss, you’ll need to unlock the Commandeer ability.

  1. Earn 2 upgrade points by leveling up after your shifts

  2. Open the Upgrades tab at HQ

  3. Spend 1 point to unlock Reinforced Glass (this is required to access the Vehicle skill tree)

  4. Spend your second point on Commandeer

Once that’s done, you’re clear to take control of any car in the city.

Step 2: Take Over Any Vehicle

Once you’ve unlocked the Commandeer skill, you can walk up to any vehicle and enter it:

  • If it’s occupied, you’ll get a “Commandeer Vehicle” prompt. This kicks the driver out peacefully and places a police siren on the hood automatically.

  • If it’s empty, you can break the window and climb in, though this will trigger the alarm until you activate your siren.

Either way, once you’re inside, Cordell marks the car as a cop vehicle by slapping a flashing red light on top. You can now use it just like your regular patrol car.

What Kinds of Cars Can You Use?

You can commandeer pretty much anything that’s drivable, including muscle cars, sedans, and some iconic classics inspired by real-world models like the Dodge Challenger and Pontiac Firebird. All of them handle differently, so experiment to find what works best for pursuits or just cruising with style.

Final Blurb

Changing cars in The Precinct is easy once you unlock Commandeer, and honestly, it’s worth doing early. Whether you’re in hot pursuit or just tired of the Caprice clone, sometimes switching rides is the fastest way to get the job done. Plus, flashing lights on a civilian muscle car? Never gets old.

FAQ

Q: Do you lose your patrol car when you change vehicles?
No, you can always return to HQ to get a new one or summon another patrol unit later.

Q: Can I use any car in the game?
Most civilian vehicles are available once you unlock Commandeer, but you can’t use parked props or heavy trucks.

Q: Does commandeering alert anyone?
If you break into a parked car, the alarm goes off, but using the Commandeer prompt on a moving vehicle is silent.

Q: Can I store different vehicles?
No, there’s no garage or long-term storage. Every vehicle swap is temporary until you change again or return to HQ.
