Ah, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”—a quest with high stakes, limited time, and a splash of medieval fever drama. Captain Thomas is on his deathbed, and without him, Hans faces a one-way trip to the gallows. The bad news? You’ve got 12 bell tolls to save the day. The good news? We’ve got a guide to help you get there before the executioner sharpens his axe.

Here’s a quick guide on how to save Thomas.

Step 1: Locate Thomas

Finding Thomas is like a medieval obstacle course with extra stairs. Here’s how to navigate the castle maze:

  • Sneak into the Castle:
Head through the stone arch and take the stairs above the well.

  • Up and Around:
In the kitchen, go up the stairs on the left, then through the door at the top.

  • Follow the Pantry Path:
Go left, down to the back of the pantry, and up another staircase.

  • Avoid the Guard:
If there’s a sentry, toss a rock to distract him. Or, if stealth isn’t your thing, embrace the chaos and make a run for it.

  • Find the Tower:
Keep climbing stairs until you reach the tower. Thomas will be there, with his sister Adela trying to keep him alive.

Step 2: Get the Fever Tonic Recipe

Adela will inform you that Thomas needs a special tonic. Of course, the physician is conveniently out of town, leaving you to play medieval pharmacist.

  • Head to the Physician’s Room:

    • Retrace your steps back down the stairs.

    • Pass through the courtyard, hugging the left wall to avoid guards.

    • Enter the door on the battlements to find the physician’s room.

  • Find the Recipe:

    • Check the wooden shelf for the physician’s journal.

    • Use a lockpick (more on that below) to open the chest in the room.

    • Inside, you’ll find the recipe:

      • 3x Feverfew

      • 2x Ginger

      • 1x Elderberry Leaf

  • Optional Help from Katherine:

    • If Katherine is there, she might help you brew the potion. If not, you’re on your own.

Step 3: Brewing the Fever Tonic

Now that you have the recipe, find an alchemy bench to brew the tonic. Follow the steps precisely—this isn’t the time to improvise like you’re on a cooking show.

Step 4: Deliver the Tonic to Thomas

Race back to the tower with the potion in hand. Administer it to Thomas, and voilà! He’ll recover enough to prove Hans’s innocence. Hopefully, you made it before the 12th bell tolls, or things are going to get messy at the gallows.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Lockpicks:
If you don’t have any lockpicks, grab one from a small container near the stables in the courtyard. Alternatively, buy one from the stablehand—if you can scrounge up enough groschen.

  2. Avoid Guards:
Throwing rocks is your best bet to distract guards. Or, if you’re feeling bold, try your charm and hope they’re not too sharp.

  3. Time Management:
This quest is all about speed. If you’re still wandering the castle by the 8th bell, you might want to restart and focus on fewer detours.

Final Blurb

With the fever tonic in hand, you’ll have a satisfied captain, a grateful Hans, and (hopefully) no bloody executions on your conscience. Remember: in Bohemia, time waits for no one, especially when bells are tolling.
