Oblivion Remastered Early Game Tips

Regardless of whether you’re new to Oblivion Remastered or returning after years away, the early hours can be rough. Here’s a basic guide on what you should do early on in your playthrough.

1. Join Multiple Guilds Early

Guilds offer fast access to gold, skill boosts, gear, and places to sleep for free. Even if you don’t plan to follow their questlines right away, signing up with the Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, and Thieves Guild will open doors (and wallets).

Tip: Even stealth or combat-focused characters should consider Mages Guild early to unlock Arcane University for spellmaking.

2. Slow Down Your Leveling

Enemies in Oblivion level with you. If you speed through levels without upgrading your combat skills and gear, you’ll face Glass-armored bandits while still swinging iron weapons. Level slowly, train combat skills, and delay sleeping to avoid leveling too fast.

3. Always Save Before Leaving the Tutorial Sewer

Make a manual save before exiting the Imperial Sewers. This lets you restart new characters without replaying the entire tutorial every time. It also gives you a chance to test builds before committing.

4. Finish Kvatch Quests Early

The Kvatch battle quests are much easier at Level 1. Waiting until Level 10+ will pit you against tough enemies like Flame Atronachs and Scamps in heavy armor. Clear Kvatch soon and enjoy the early rewards.

5. Claim Your Free Horse at Weynon Priory

Once you give the Amulet of Kings to Jauffre, talk to Prior Maborel. Ask for assistance and you’ll receive a free horse—no gold or guilds required.

6. Grab an Enchanted Weapon Quickly

Many early enemies, like ghosts and wraiths, are immune to regular weapons. Pick up an enchanted weapon fast:

  • Blade of Woe (join the Dark Brotherhood)

  • Umbra (if you’re brave)

  • Or loot minor magical weapons from dungeon bosses.

7. Train Combat Skills on Peryite Worshippers

Visit the Shrine of Peryite before starting its quest. The frozen, invincible worshippers make perfect targets for raising Blade, Destruction, and other combat skills without danger. You can grind skills here without risking health or attracting guards.

8. Get a Free Player Home for Storage

Battlehorn Castle can be claimed early by defending it from a small bandit attack. Afterward, you’ll have a permanent home with safe containers for loot storage. No more hiding gear in random barrels!

9. Use Alchemy for Easy Gold

Grab a Mortar & Pestle (free in the tutorial) and gather ingredients like Lady’s Smock or Stinkhorn Caps. Potion-making with Alchemy can bring in fast gold, especially before major questlines offer steady income.

10. Don’t Worry About Vampirism Yet

Vampirism can be powerful, but it’s also a hassle for new players. Feeding, avoiding sun damage, and managing fast travel restrictions make it more trouble than it’s worth early on. If infected with Porphyric Hemophilia, cure it quickly with a potion or chapel visit.

Final Blurb

The early game in Oblivion Remastered rewards careful prep and smart exploration. Build slowly, grab free resources wherever possible, and before long you’ll be strong enough to take on anything, from bandit kings to Daedric lords.
