The Hermit quest is a mix of detective work, stealthy shenanigans, and good old-fashioned blacksmithing. Here’s a quick guide and walkthrough to help you navigate the quest, step-by-step!
Step 1: Start the Quest
This quest is part of the blacksmithing quest chain tied to the main story and the wedding arc. You’ll get it from a guy in Tachov—no need to hunt him down too hard, he’s central to the storyline. Once you’ve completed the prerequisites, you’ll be directed to investigate the Hermit.
Step 2: Visit the Tavern in Troskowitz
Your first lead is Betty, the lady at the tavern in Troskowitz (you know, the one you probably annoyed earlier in the game).
Head to the tavern and talk to her.
Skip any accidental trade menus (classic Henry) and go through the dialogue until you unlock the option to ask about the Hermit.
She’ll give you the next location to check out.
Step 3: Find the Hermit’s House
Your next stop is the Hermit’s secluded hideout, which is—unsurprisingly—hidden deep in the woods.
Look on your map for the marker near Rocktower Pond.
Follow the hidden animal trail near a creek. It’s easy to miss, so take your time.
When the trail splits, keep right and climb uphill. The house is tucked away, so don’t be surprised if you overshoot it and have to backtrack.
Step 4: Steal the Diary (Stealth Mode Recommended)
Once you’ve found the Hermit’s house, you’ll need to grab his diary. Here’s how:
Wait until just after midnight when the Hermit is sleeping.
Sneak into the house—crouch, move slowly, and avoid waking him up.
Find his diary (hint: it’s one of the books in the room).
If your Thievery skill is low, this might be tricky. Be patient, or come back after leveling up a bit.
Step 5: Read the Diary and Find the Grave
Once you have the diary, open your inventory and read it under the Quest Items tab. It’ll give you the next clue: a grave hidden west of the Hermit’s house.
Head to the meadow west of the house.
Look for a distinctive double birch tree—it’s near the grave.
Dig up the grave (don’t forget your shovel!) to find:
A broken sword (sticking out of the grave)
Some miscellaneous loot (including a gemstone ring worth 200 Groschen)
Step 6: Repair the Hermit Sword
Now that you’ve got the broken sword, head back to the blacksmith in Tachov to repair it.
Talk to the blacksmith and give him the materials.
Use the blacksmithing station to repair the sword yourself.
Blacksmithing Refresher:
Heat the Sword: Move the blade over the coals until it’s glowing yellow.
Hammer the Blade: Hold and release the attack button for full hammer swings. Sparks = success.
Quench the Blade: Once finished, quench it in the water barrel.
If done correctly, you’ll get the Hermit Sword with solid stats.
Step 7: Wrap Up the Quest
Return to the blacksmith in Tachov and hand over the repaired sword. He’ll commend your work, and the quest will officially wrap up.
Bonus Tips
Stealth Is Your Friend: If you’re having trouble stealing the diary, try leveling up your stealth or investing in gear that reduces noise.
Blacksmithing Practice: If you’re struggling to get a high-quality sword, take some time to practice blacksmithing on simpler items first.
Enjoy the Lore: The Hermit’s diary is a fun read, so take a moment to soak in the story (or skim it, if you’re impatient).
Final Blurb
The Hermit is one of those quests that feels like a wild goose chase—hidden trails, grave digging, and late-night break-ins all included. But the reward, the Hermit Sword, makes it all worth it. Plus, you get some juicy backstory about greed, betrayal, and… well, a hermit. So, sharpen your tools, grab your shovel, and get to work—Bohemia isn’t going to explore itself!
