Best Characters to Pick in Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days

You can technically beat the game with any survivor/character pair. Nobody is totally useless, and the game isn’t cruel enough to soft-lock you based on who you pick. But if you want a smoother ride, especially early on, some duos are clearly better than others. Here’s who to go with if you like surviving with fewer headaches.

Daphne and Penny

Daphne handles the shelter. Penny handles the stabbing. Together, they’re one of the best pairs for new players.

Daphne can cook more food per recipe and craft medical items with fewer resources. Sure, she’s not much of a fighter, but most of the game rewards stealth anyway. You won’t notice her lower damage unless you mess up and get caught swinging.

Penny is perfect for sneaky scavenging. She makes less noise and hits harder with bladed weapons. The only drawback is her trauma trait, which sometimes triggers when she’s attacked. It’s annoying but manageable if you play carefully.

Pick these two if you want to keep your shelter stocked, your food supply stable, and your scavenging quiet.

Sebastian and Dianne

Sebastian and Dianne are a solid middle-of-the-road pair that quietly do their jobs without making a fuss or making your life any harder than it needs to be.

Sebastian loves him some guns. He makes ranged weapons cheaper to repair and does more damage when using them, which can be a huge plus if you like staying at a distance. He’s also a bit emotionally worn down and takes longer to recover Morale, but that’s manageable if you play around it.

Dianne is basically the team’s engine. She loses Rest slower than everyone else, which means she can stay productive longer without crashing. She also passively gains Morale each phase, making her a steady presence. The downside? Her crafting skills are kind of terrible, especially when it comes to barricades. So maybe don’t leave her in charge of fixing the front door.

If you like ranged weapons and want a team that doesn’t require constant micromanagement, this duo will serve you well. They’re not flashy, but they get the job done.

Hector and Kayla

This father-daughter duo starts strong and stays useful with the right management.

Hector is great at breaking down junk into parts and reinforcing your base. He also makes barricades cheaper to fix, which matters a lot early on. The problem? He burns through Rest faster than anyone else, so you’ll need to send him to bed more often.

Kayla makes up for it with her mobility. She’s evasive in combat and can crank out extra lockpicks, which means more access to locked loot. Her smaller backpack is a pain, though—you’ll need more trips to fully scavenge an area.

Choose this pair if you like crafting, fortifying, and having a reliable lockpicker on every run.

Final Blurb

All survivor pairs can get the job done, but Daphne and Penny make it easier from the jump. If you’re looking for steady resource management and solid stealth, they’re your go-to. Hector and Kayla are a close second if you want more base upgrades and don’t mind watching Hector’s rest meter like a hawk. Everyone else? They’ll survive. Probably.
