If you’ve been wandering around wondering where the magic is, you're not alone. A lot of players are confused because the Magic skill tree says “Coming Soon,” which makes it feel like spells don’t exist yet. But surprise: you can already craft and use staves, and they do work with elemental runes.
So if you’re looking to shoot glowing air balls instead of swinging a stick, here’s how to actually get your hands on a staff.

Step 1: Unlock the Staff Crafting Recipe
You won’t see the recipe right away. You need to:
Progress through early game quests and gathering
Unlock Runecrafting and start making Air and Fire runes
Eventually, crafting and exploring will unlock magic gear recipes like the Staff of Light
No specific questline unlocks it—just play naturally, craft what you find, and the staff will show up in your available blueprints once you’ve hit the right progression point.
Step 2: Gather the Materials
To craft a basic magic staff, you’ll need:
Flax to make thread
Wood (usually Ash Logs)
Maybe a few basic runes for charging it, depending on the version
You’ll craft it from your Base Crafting Station once unlocked.
Step 3: Slot Runes into the Staff
Once you have a staff:
Open your rune pouch
Look for runes with an orange diamond above them (usually Air or Fire)
Right-click the rune to assign it to your staff
That’s it—your staff is now magically powered and ready to fling glowing orbs at goblins.
Quick Notes About Staffs in Dragon Wilds
You can’t level Magic (the skill) yet—that part really is “coming soon.”
You can find Magic EXP books in vault chests that boost your Magic level a bit.
Spells aren’t complex yet—it’s mostly just elemental blasts based on your equipped rune.
Final Blurb
Magic in Dragonwilds isn’t fully unlocked, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Craft a staff, toss in some Air runes, and you’ll be spell-slinging in no time. Sure, there’s no big firestorm spell yet, but early access magic still hits harder than you’d expect—and it looks way cooler than throwing rocks.
