How to Open the Map in Clair Obscur Expedition 33

The map in Expedition 33 works differently than most RPGs. You don’t get a minimap or area map. Instead, you’ll eventually unlock the overworld map, which shows major locations only.
Here’s how it works.
How to Open the Map
Keyboard and Mouse
Press M. Works only when you’re outside on the world map. Won’t work inside towns, ruins, or any local area.
Controller
D-pad Up. Same as keyboard. Only usable on the overworld.
When Can You Use the Map
You don’t start the game with map access. The overworld map becomes available after you complete the early main story quests and reach your first big overworld travel section.
Until then, you must explore areas without any map help. No minimap or radar is provided. This is by design. The game wants you to feel “lost” like the Expedition members.
Why There’s No Minimap
A lot of players are confused by the missing minimap. It’s intentional. Lore-wise, nobody returns from Expeditions, so no maps exist for local zones. This also forces you to learn the layouts and landmarks instead of following waypoints.
Quick Tips for Navigation
Use landmarks. Look for statues, towers, or unique scenery.
Backtrack carefully. Most areas loop or connect back to earlier paths.
Watch for branching paths. Dungeons often have multiple exits or shortcuts.
Final Blurb
You’ll need to explore the old-fashioned way. No minimap. No hand-holding. Just you, the team, and whatever landmarks you can spot.
