Selling items on the Market Board in Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) is a great way to make gil. It’s actually pretty simple, but you need to unlock a few things first. Here’s how to start selling:

1. Unlock a Retainer

To sell items on the Market Board, you need a Retainer. Retainers are NPC helpers who sell your items and store extra stuff for you.

How to Get a Retainer:

  • Complete the Main Story Quest “The Scions of the Seventh Dawn” (around Level 17).

  • Visit the Retainer Vocate in any major city (Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul’dah).

  • They will guide you through hiring your first Retainer. You can hire up to two Retainers for free.

2. Set Up Your Retainer

When you hire a Retainer, you’ll:

  • Pick a name for your Retainer.

  • Choose a class or job for them (optional for Ventures but not necessary for selling).

Once your Retainer is ready you can start selling items.

3. Find a Market Board

Market Boards are located in the main cities (Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, Ul’dah) and player housing areas. These boards let players buy and browse items. You don’t interact with the Market Board directly to sell, but you’ll use it to check prices.

4. Put Items Up for Sale

To sell items, follow these steps:

  1. Talk to your Retainer at a Summoning Bell (near Market Boards or in housing areas).

  2. Select “Sell Items on the Market.”

  3. Drag items from your inventory to the Retainer’s inventory.

  4. Set a price for each item based on current Market Board prices.

Pricing Tip:

  • Use the Market Board to check what others are selling the item for. Try to price yours competitively to sell faster.

5. Wait for Buyers

Once your items are listed, they’ll appear on the Market Board for other players to buy. When someone buys your item:

  • You’ll get a notification in your inventory.

  • The gil will go directly to your Retainer.

6. Collect Your Gil

To get your gil, talk to your Retainer at a Summoning Bell. Select “Withdraw Gil” to transfer it to your inventory.

Important Notes

  • Market Tax: Each city has a tax on sales. To lower taxes, sell items in the city where they are cheapest (shown on the Market Board).

  • Free Trial Players: Free Trial accounts cannot sell items on the Market Board.

  • Retainer Storage: Your Retainer can hold items even if they aren’t listed for sale, so they’re also great for extra storage.

That’s it! Now you can start selling items and earning gil on the Market Board in FFXIV.
