Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Beginner’s Guide (Global)
Written by Priya Kapoor
In Uma Musume Pretty Derby, you build a team by training horse girls through a mode called Career. You unlock and power up each character by completing full training runs, then use them in other content like PvP and daily races.
Here’s a guide on how to get started and what you need to know.
How Training Works
Starting a Run
Go to Career Mode and choose a trainee. Then select two Legacies, which pass on stat boosts and sparks. After that, you pick six Support Cards, five of your own and one borrowed.
These choices affect every part of the run.
Using Turns
Each run has about 70 turns. You’ll spend most turns resting, training, racing, or going out.
Going out boosts mood and gives energy. Mood directly improves training and racing. Always keep it high.
Training raises stats like speed, stamina, power, guts, and wisdom. Every facility boosts different stats. Training with support characters gives extra gains.
Stats Explained
Speed controls how fast your girl runs
Stamina keeps her going during longer races
Power improves acceleration and helps on hills
Guts helps reduce stamina use
Wisdom increases skill activation and improves pacing
You build stats by using turns wisely and choosing the best facility each round.
Races and Career Goals
Racing Basics
You’ll enter races throughout each Career. Some are optional, some are required.
Races are fully automatic, but you pick a running strategy. These include:
End Closer
Late Surger
Pace Chaser
Front Runner
Always choose a strategy that matches your character’s strengths.
Career Objectives
Each trainee has race goals. If you fail any, the run ends. Most goals ask you to place well or gain fans.
Winning races gives skill points and increases fans, so race often when training options are weak.
Skills and Support Bonuses
Skills
Skills give your girl passive or race-based advantages.
You buy them with skill points. Unlock more skills through support card hints, Legacies, random events, or awakening characters.
Some skills carry over to future runs once unlocked.
Support Bonuses
Support characters boost stat gain when training together. Look for characters with red exclamation marks to unlock new skill hints.
As you train with them, their friendship meter grows. Once full, you unlock a bonus that improves stat growth when training in matching facilities.
Pal-type supports like Tazuna and Aoi offer outings instead of stat boosts. These give better rewards and reduce energy use.
Gacha and Rerolling
Scout System
There are two types of scouts:
Pretty Derby Scout for new characters
Support Card Scout for training boosts
Use Carats or tickets to pull. Support Cards matter more for gameplay strength.
Rerolling
Don’t link your account until you're happy.
To reroll:
Play through the tutorial
Use your Carats and tickets to scout
If results are bad, delete user data from the settings menu
Restart the game and choose to skip the tutorial
Repeat until you pull good Support Cards like SSR Super Creek, Fine Motion, or Kitasan Black.
Extra Modes
Team Trials
PvP mode with five race types: Sprint, Mile, Medium, Long, and Dirt.
Build a team of 15 trained characters. Win three of five races to earn bonuses.
You start at Class 1 and move up weekly by scoring high.
Daily Races
Do up to three a day for Monies or Support Points. Run the highest difficulty you can win.
Legend Races
Time-limited events that give Star Pieces. Win to collect pieces and upgrade character rarity.
Story Events
Event runs reward a free support card and other materials. Use Career Mode and missions to earn points. Spin the roulette with tokens to unlock bingo boards and get rewards.
Final Blurb
Uma Musume Pretty Derby looks silly, but it plays like a full raising sim with actual strategy. Build a smart support deck, manage your training, and don’t cry when RNG ruins your run; just click delete data and try again.
