Why Did Sophie Die in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?

Sophie’s death in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn’t just a random tragedy, but rather it’s tied to the core of how the game's world works.
In the world of Clair Obscur, people don’t just live until old age. Every year, the mysterious Paintress paints a number on her Monolith. Anyone whose age matches that number turns to dust in what's called the Gommage. Sophie, like many others, was simply a victim of this cruel system. When the Paintress marked "33," Sophie—being 33 years old—met her end.
But here’s where it gets more complicated.
Sophie wasn’t just erased by fate. The entire painted world is actually a creation—an emotional escape made by Aline, the real-world mother of Verso, Alicia (Maelle), and Clea. Everyone in Lumière, including Sophie, exists because of grief, memories, and magic. So when the Monolith shattered near the end of the game, it triggered another wave of destruction. Everyone, including Sophie, was wiped out again—regardless of age.
Depending on which ending you choose, Sophie’s fate plays out differently:
Maelle’s Ending:
Sophie, along with others, is brought back when Maelle decides to keep the canvas world alive. You see Sophie alive and well, sitting in the opera house like nothing ever happened.
Verso’s Ending:
If you choose Verso, he destroys the canvas entirely. Sophie, along with every other character tied to that world, disappears forever.
Final Blurb
Sophie didn’t die because of bad luck. She died because she was trapped in a world built on grief and rules she couldn’t escape. Whether she stays gone or gets a second chance is entirely up to you. In Clair Obscur, even death is just another brushstroke in someone else’s painting.
