How to Upgrade Weapons: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Upgrading weapons in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth isn’t rocket science, but it’s not as easy as, say, tying your shoes either. This guide will walk you through the basics of weapon upgrades.

Step 1: Use Your Weapons (Duh)

To upgrade a weapon, you need to use it. A lot. Weapons in this game aren’t just for looking cool (though they do). Each weapon has a special ability, and the more you use it, the better you get at it. This is called "proficiency."

Once you max out proficiency for a weapon’s ability, you can use that ability even if you switch to a new weapon. Basically, it’s like unlocking a skill that stays with you forever—like riding a bike, but more violent.

Pro Tip: Check the proficiency bonus for each weapon. You can find this in the Materia & Equipment menu. Follow those instructions to level it up faster.

Step 2: Tinker in the Upgrade Weapons Screen

Now that you’ve worn out your weapon from all that use, it’s time to upgrade it. Head to the Upgrade Weapons screen in the main menu. Here’s the plan:

  1. Select Your Weapon: Pick the one you’ve been using.

  2. Press Triangle/Y: This opens the Set Weapon Skills option. Fancy, right?

  3. Choose Materia: You can swap, tweak, or enhance your weapon skills by assigning Materia. It’s like customizing your car but for RPG nerds.

Step 3: Let the Game Do the Work (Optional but Awesome)

If you’re not into micromanaging weapon upgrades, you can let the game handle it for you. Use the Auto-Upgrade Settings. When you select a weapon, just press Start to access these settings. You’ll see three options:

  • Balanced: For those who want a bit of everything.

  • Prioritize Attack: For folks who believe the best defense is a good offense.

  • Prioritize Defense: For players who prefer to turtle up and wait for an opening.

Pick one and let the game sprinkle the upgrades like toppings on a sundae.

Bonus Tip: Experiment and Have Fun

Weapons and skills in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are like a box of chocolates. Try them all. Stick with what you like. Remember, the only wrong choice is not upgrading at all.

Now go out there, swing some swords, and show Sephiroth who’s boss. Or at least try not to accidentally spend 20 minutes upgrading the wrong weapon (we’ve all been there).

Good luck!
