Oblivion Remastered: How to Fix FPS Drops and Stuttering

If your FPS tanks the moment you leave the sewers, you're not alone. Here's how to fix the constant stuttering and lag in Oblivion Remastered, especially in the open world.
Step 1: NEVER Change Graphics Settings In-Game
The single biggest fix is this:
Only change graphics settings from the main menu before loading your save.
If you adjust settings mid-game, restart the game afterward. Otherwise, you’ll trigger bugs that cause massive stutter and FPS drops.
Step 2: Recommended Graphics Settings
Change these from the main menu only:
Window Mode: Fullscreen
V-Sync: Off
Frame Limit: Uncapped
Motion Blur: Off
Upscaling: FSR
FSR3 Mode: Balanced
FSR3 Sharpness: 100
FSR3 Frame Gen: On
Lumen Hardware RT: Off
Lumen Software RT: Low
All other settings: Medium to High (personal preference)
Shadow Quality: Medium (or Low if still stuttering)
Step 3: Fix Engine.ini for Better Performance
Go to this folder:
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Oblivion Remastered\Saved\Config\Windows
Replace the
Engine.ini
file with a tweaked version (look for Lumen Begone or optimization-focused versions from Nexus or MegaGames).Right-click the file, go to Properties, and set it to Read-Only.
This tweak alone can give you 20–40 more FPS and smoother loading.
Step 4: Rename the DLSS DLL File
Navigate to:
...\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion Remastered\Engine\Plugins\Marketplace\nvidia\DLSSS\Streamline\Binaries\ThirdParty\Win64
Find sl.pcl.dll
(or sc.pcl.dll
) and rename it to something like sl.pcl.bak
.
This helped a lot of players reduce stutter—especially with NVIDIA cards. Do not do this if you’re using NVIDIA Frame Generation.
Step 5: Roll Back Drivers (NVIDIA Only)
If you're using an NVIDIA 40-series GPU and getting bad stutter:
Roll back to driver version 572.83
Delete the
Oblivion Remastered
config folder from Documents (back up your saves!)Launch the game to rebuild the shader cache
Then copy your saves back in
This resolved CPU-related stuttering for many high-end users.
Optional: Extra Tweaks
Cap your FPS with your GPU software if you’re getting screen tearing with Frame Gen.
Use DLSS or FSR3, not both. Some players report ghosting and input lag with FSR3.
Turn off Chromatic Aberration and Film Grain in your
Engine.ini
for a cleaner look.
Final Blurb
The stutter in Oblivion Remastered is brutal, but it's fixable with the right steps. Don’t mess with settings mid-game, swap in an optimized Engine.ini, and consider ditching DLSS for FSR if you’re desperate. Until Bethesda drops a proper patch, this is your best shot at a smooth ride through Cyrodiil.
