You’ll need the climbing tools to keep progressing through Chapter 4, but they’re locked behind a required miniboss fight. If you’re running into walls labeled “you don’t have the right tools,” you haven’t missed anything... you just need to win a fight first.
Where to Find the Climbing Tools
Fight Jackenstein
The climbing gear is your reward for beating Jackenstein, a miniboss that shows up after you reach Gerson’s house and explore the northwest library area.
He’s not optional. If you haven’t beaten him, that’s why you can’t climb anything.
How to Reach the Fight
Make your way through the northwest corridor past the slow-moving blue book enemy, then climb the nearby ladder and interact with the blue piano.
That triggers a bookshelf slide puzzle. Solve it to open the next hallway.
Keep heading right and defeat or spare the ghost enemy (a Guei). There’s another slide puzzle with green and pink pianos in the room beyond.
Finish that puzzle and collect the four musical notes in the following room. Then double back and explore the far left hallway to get four more.
Once you’ve got all eight notes, head to the middle doorway with the Delta Rune. Play the tune to unlock the boss room.
Beating Jackenstein
Jackenstein hits hard and moves fast. Use Act commands to stall or slow him, keep Kris healed, and focus Susie on breaking his shield.
When he powers up halfway, don’t panic. Block or dodge until he cools off, then finish the fight. You can see our Jackenstein Guide here.
Once you beat him, the climbing tools automatically unlock, and you can start exploring new vertical areas in the chapter.
